I'd say that Ubuntu would be my second choice after Gentoo.  I've been
running it on my Desktop PC for a few months now, and for a binary distro
I'm very impressed.  I don't have mythtv on it, because I don't really
have any need for it, but I do have some bleeding edge stuff in the form
of Beryl / Compiz Fusion and that updates itsself every day from a binary
install pretty seamlessly.

Good luck!  I'm sure you'll be fine with Ubuntu.  Oh, and don't create a
root user (I didn't actually realise that Ubuntu was lacking a root
user!), just use 'sudo'.
