Thank you all for your advice.

However, I've taken a completely different path for solving this: 
Installing Ubuntu 6.10.

Ubuntu 7.04 seems to unfortunately be a little too feisty at the moment. 
It's been having all sorts of problems.

Whereas Ubuntu 6.10 seems to be working very smoothly. The lesson 
learned is to not be so close to the bleeding edge all the time.

In any case, thank you all very much for having provided good advice and 
information.
