I'm using wireless 54g just fine... for SD. I doubt 54g would do HD for 
you but that's just a hunch. Anyway everything works great over wireless 
for me, never so much as a hiccup. Live TV and watching recordings works 
just as well as the backend/frontend machine. The only thing that's 
slower is when skipping ahead 30 seconds, downstairs I can skip at a 
rate of 1.5 min per second. Upstairs it probably takes around 1 second 
to skip ahead 45 seconds or so.

The wireless AP is a Linksys WRT54g. The wireless card in linux is a 
zonet ZE1601. Based on a Ralink chip; works excellently. The zonet 
costed me $15 from Newegg. $5 after rebate. I don't think anything can 
beat that, except free really.
