Easy way -if you have a keyboard attached, do the mplayer keyboard
shortcuts work?

Also, are you sure your ~/.lircrc file is good (i.e. referencing
mplayer and using the correct remote definition and button names, and
mplayer key names)? Perhaps post a snippet...
