Actually, copyright infringement is a federal offense. Now, whether
copying an unencrypted (because of the DMCA issue you mention below) DVD

You /own/ the movie? You paid the millions of dollars to create the
movie? Wow.
I simply buy discs that contain a copy of the movie which I am licensed
to view through a licensed DVD player. I just can't afford to pay for
the production of all the movies I want to see, and, unfortunately, they
tend to finish production of the movies before I even realize I want to
see them, so I'm usually too late, anyway. (And then there's the issues
of all the copyrights owned by all the parties involved... Author,
producer, director, actors, ...)
