First, well done.  You've put a lot of effort into this.

The Xorg generated configuration file didn't give you a DefaultDepth in 
the Screen section, which is weird and I would suggest trying that.  I 
can't tell which depth Xorg chose in the end though, and I don't think 
the log tells you anywhere, which is a shame.  Also, you didn't have 
DPMS enabled in the first configuration that worked, so maybe try 
disabling that again, but I admit, I've never seen that option do 
anything productive, so I may be corrected.
