In principle, DRM could be used be the innocent consumer to limit the
big players' access to his personal information, thus re-establishing a
fair bit of privacy on the net.

In practice, DRM is controlled by the big players, who will only allow
it to be used to screw the innocent consumer, exactly as you've
described.
