I supsect the problem is with the way you're starting lirc.
login is root just to get it working
Do a ps -A | grep lirc*
and kill the lirc process(s)
then do a
ls -sl /dev/lirc*
if you get lirc0
then do
lirc -d /dev/lirc0 /etc/lircd.conf
if lirc doesn't start do a which lirc as root the do
/path/to/lirc -d /dev/lirc0 /etc/lircd.conf
then try irw

I'm using a laptop as a remote frontend. Performs beautifully! I'm going
to hook it up to my TV as soon as I can get a remote control to work with
it.
I'm trying out an ATI Remote Wonder Plus (5000026900). Two weeks and many
trials and errors later, I'm about to admit defeat. [or maybe pray that next
week's FC6 will cure all ills!]
I've got a fresh install of FC5 so I can start over. Here are some data.
I'm hoping somebody out there has some wisdom to share!

Used ATrpms' "lirc-kmdl-[uname -r]"
I've not edited /etc/modprobe.conf
Also, /etc/lircd.conf is a best guess borrowed from elsewhere.

Hold down an arbitrary button.
