I was patient, and watched some more, and you're right.  It's picking it up, 
or not.

Edit the recording, import the commercial skip list (see
http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-11.html#ss11.1 under "In edit
mode").  Just make sure you clear the cut points to go back to "normal"
if you don't reposition them.

It didn't detect the start of the commercial break at the right point.
If you keep watching commercials, you'll probably see the popup in 30
seconds or a minute.
