if, using speaker-test, you put -Dplug:iec958, try putting
ALSA:plug:iec958 in mythtv.  also, sorry for coming in late, but did you
already post your /etc/asound.conf and $HOME/.asoundrc files? those
might point us in the right direction.  what kind of soundcard?
