I think this is dependent upon whether your SPDIF output \requires\
48kHz audio - for those of us with systems that do, the comprehensive
asoundrc on the MythTV wiki resamples all PCM audio to 48kHz and so
everything (MP3s, videos etc) sounds normal but plays through the
SPDIF. Any AC3 material is sent in raw format directly to the receiver
to decode.
