I had checked that first.  Yes, it exists.

In allamixer, my IEC958 doesn't have a volume slider.  Hm.

Your aplay -L output indecates you still have an asoundrc file

I don't have a ~/.asoundrc or /etc/asoundrc.  I did have an
/etc/asound.conf, which I just hid (rename it to .hide).  Nothing's
different.  From aplay -v -D spdif I get: "aplay: main:547: audio open
error: No such file or directory".


Try again with mplayer: "mplayer -v -ao alsa -afm hwac3 -

mplayer still gives no audio.

Fedora Core 5, linux kernel 2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp.  I've been using Red Hat &
ilk for years, but if a different distro is likely to have more success then
