I've been using firewire to a DCT-6200 cable box with great success, its
reliable about 99% of the time. The firewire ports migrate occasionally,
usually when the cable box is rebooted but this is very infrequent on my
system as I've protected it with a decent ups.

I'd also give a shout-out to RCN of Massachusetts as I'm getting 100% of my
channel line-up including subscription Hi-Def content (HBO etc) over
firewire here without any of that 5C nonsense.
