Figured it out.

mythfilldatabase --refresh-all fixed the problem with the listings

Sound is intermittent.  I think its a processor issue - a Celeron 
2.6GHz, I think it is on the cusp.  If a program starts without sound, I 
can jump about within the program, and sound will start up.

All the programs I have scheduled have since my initial troubles have 
recorded properly and in their entirety.  So far so good.
