Quicktime / Quicktime Player needs the MPEG2 playback component 
(which doesn't come with OS X by default) to access MPEG2 content. 
It's available for purchase - US$20 - at the online Apple Store, or 
it's included with Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro.

Or you could use VLC...
