[mythtv-users] Building from source

I'm running Ubuntu 6.10 and I've installed mythtv via apt-get.  Now I'd like
to try to build the "fixes" version from the fixes branch.  Should I
"configure" the source version to install into /usr?  Should I remove the
existing MythTV package (apt-get remove ???) before installing the source
version?  If the source version is buggy/unacceptable how can I restore the
package version (is apt-get install sufficient)?
