What's the reason for playing such using aplay as above before you start
mythfrontend? (and how on earth did you figure out this workaround?!)

I suspect this mirrors my experience when I was occasionally able to get 5.1
working without the chopper blades but couldn't figure out what order of
things I had done to make it work.
