I am not using digital output, just the standard line out
to a plain old television set.

I tried a few more experiments today. Setting the volume
level in alsamixer changes the volume when I play an mp3
through mplayer. However, it has no effect when I play videos
through mythtv.
I have the checkbox for "Use internal volume controls selected". The
PCM setting on the slider in the General setup screen will move,
but has no effect.
Recorded tv can be played in mythtv. Some of my videos
will play with sound others have no sound. MP3 music will not play.
