What you'll in fact find is that gdmsetup wont let you select the
mythtv user, generally. Because the mythtv user is added by a
post-install script as a system user, it's UID is less than 1000,
which is where 'regular' user accounts start on ubuntu. gdmsetup, near
as I can tell, wont let you select a user for automatic login who's
UID is less than 1000. So the simple solution is to edit
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf in your favourite text editor. Here's the relevant
section from my gdm.conf:

[daemon]
# Automatic login, if true the first local screen will automatically logged in
# as user as set with AutomaticLogin key.
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=mythtv
