How about the file's permissions? Can you access it? If so, your mplayer
and xine are not compiled with DivX or better still xvid support. The
xvid:

      http://www.xvid.org/

or divx:

      http://www.divx.com/

libraries and codecs must be present on the system when mplayer or xine
is compiled in order to use them.
