I was close. It seems the problem was my root partition was full! I
don't know how I didn't notice that sooner.

The reason it was full? My stupid bloody Benq DVD burner (the piece
of shit it is). The other day, the drive locked and wouldn't eject
the DVD I burnt, so being the heavy handed brute I am, I forced it to
eject with a paper-clip.

Since then, my kern.log and syslog have both been filling up with
message like the following:
May 31 07:39:59 localhost kernel: [5891363.313000] hdc: ATAPI reset complete
May 31 07:39:59 localhost kernel: [5891363.313000] hdc: status error:
status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
May 31 07:39:59 localhost kernel: [5891363.313000] ide: failed opcode
was: unknown
May 31 07:39:59 localhost kernel: [5891363.313000] hdc: drive not
ready for command
May 31 07:39:59 localhost kernel: [5891363.313000] hdc: status error:
status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
May 31 07:39:59 localhost kernel: [5891363.313000] ide: failed opcode
was: unknown
May 31 07:39:59 localhost kernel: [5891363.313000] hdc: drive not
ready for command
May 31 07:39:59 localhost kernel: [5891363.313000] hdc: status error:
status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

so much so that today, they each wrote 2.4Gig's of data. Given
logrotate doesn't run until tonight (cron.daily) to compress the log
files, the partition was full.

The fricken DVD burner is always locking up and has trouble reading
certain media. It needs a firmware upgrade I believe, but alas, Benq
only provides a Windows based upgrader! Anyways, that is a rant for
another thread.

Cheers,
Whytey
