Actually I haven't seen anyone use coolbits in linux either, but, 
according to Nvidia all you have to do is supposedly put an option in 
your xorg.conf
Option "coolbits" "enable"

according to their readme about configuring X on their site.  It's in 
Appendix D of the readme, but seems to be in there only for more recent 
drivers.

Yeah forgot about NVclock, it would probably be just fine.  At any rate 
the "if it's working fine don't mess with it" idea was what I was 
leaning towards, too, so I'll just leave it alone for now.  thanks
