I need some advice from more experienced myth users.

I started on my mythtv project 2-3 month ago without much knowledge
except for a few years linux experience 10 years ago.

My idea was to have a combined backend and frontend and i decided to
build it around following:
Asus K8N-E
Athlon Turion 64 M30
MSI FX5200
Terratec Cinergy 1400 DVB-T
Silverstone LC10M

I wanted an easy maintainable system and a fast start so i choose to
base it on Fedora RH4 and RPMs. Now I am getting unsure whenever that
was a good choise based on the response I got on my two current issues.
Issue 1: Frontend crashes without much message except for once in a
while a segment fault in /var/log/messages.
Issue 2: Frontend no longer run with the VFD, it turned unstable and VFD
update runs very slow and aparently cause the Frontend to be unstable too.

Should I get rid of the RPM installation and install the tar's and what
else libraries required for compilation?
Can I keep some parts in RPM's or should I forget RPM's as long it is
related to Mythtv and development libraries?
Is the problem elsewhere in my installation and should I keep on with
the RPM's?
Other sugestions not fitting in on above...

hope someone can advice me.
