Is EDID reporting a 1280x768 native resolution or just that 1280x768 is 
an acceptable input resolution.

It's quite possible.

TVOutFormat is /only/ used with TV outputs (i.e. 
S-Video/Composite/Component).  If you use VGA/DVI/..., it's ignored.

No.  That's only possible if you use Xrandr to change your video mode 
when you start playing the video, but it requires you to have a working 
1080i video mode, first.

If you're outputting a 1080i signal, it would.

Use "-fs".  Probably something like:

mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo xv /path/to/video

But, it won't just "magically switch."  ;)  (It might be possible to use 
xrandr/xvidmode to have MPlayer switch resolutions, but you'd have to 
have a working 1080i mode, first, as mentioned above.)
