I haven't unpacked it yet, but I got a StreamZap for about $30 USD that
includes a USB receiver and an IR remote control (I bought from
buy.com). My plan is to use it as a LIRC receiver for MythTV with my
current (universal) remote control. The StreamZap USB receiver will be
replacing a Hauppauge PVR-350 IR receiver which has served me well. I'm
only replacing the PVR-350 because its IR/i2c drivers conflict with the
i2c drivers needed for the AverMedia A180 HD tuner card I'd like to use.

That's true, but the MythTV PVR isn't the only IR device I need to
control so, like Santiago, I prefer an IR receiver that can handle codes
sent from a universal remote.

For the universal remote, I'm using a OneForAll URC-8820. It's cheap,
not ugly (IMO), works well, and is JP1 compatible if you ever want to do
serious reprogramming of it (good thing, as having the vendor add codes
requires mailing it in), though I've found the built-in codes + learning
features sufficient for my multi-device setup.
