I don't understand. What is "it" in "it wants to install..."?

yeah, it's the regular kernel. You can install the module but it won't
get loaded when you boot the smp kernel, it'll get included with the
appropriate kernel at boot.
If you have also installed the regular kernel, you'll need this module
(and all the other modules like lirc, ivtv, if needed) for this kernel.
