But he's saying he has the same problem with the keyboard and the  
remote, IOTW they both mis-behave in the same way. That doesn't sound  
like an lircd.conf problem to me (although your suggested test is  
still a good idea).

Sound like a keyboard problem itself, are there any messages in your  
boot logs about keyboards that look strange? Does the keyboard work  
normally with other programs (like a terminal)? Does it only behave  
strangely in X ? Is it possibly a non-standard keyboard??

Questions, questions, but they always seem to come before answers :-)
