[mythtv-users] Almost working

I now get MythTV coming up (version 0.19) but with four initial problems:
1) In Setup -  General, I get the message:

    'Could not connect to the master backend server -- is it running?
    Is the IP address set for it in the setup program correct?'

    The answer to the first was No, mythbackend wasn't running. I
    tried to start it (from Mandriva 2006) but it wouldn't.

2) On the 'Theme' screen only the line 'Use Random Theme' is
    active.

3) On the 'Localization' screen, nothing gets highlighted, although
     options are AVAILABLE.

4) I cannot exit without rebooting. The usual exit route of ESC
   brings me to a welcome screen from which no escape is possible.

This is a single machine instalation. I've checked the installation notes
but they presume that things that are not happening on my machine.
I could do with some suggestions. Thanks in advance.
