I found the aplay application useful because it (I think) plays back
through default alsa source and can be made to display what other alsa
sources are available.  So if aplay works then using ALSA:default and
default in myth should work.

And a dumb mistake I made with alsamixer was not to notice that some
of the channels were muted ( I don't think it's very obvious) so my
playing with the sliders was having no effect.
