I don't know if you're talking about actual hardware or software. For
software, the best CD/DVD mastering suite is K3B, hands down:

It might be available in Fedora Extras or even Core.
As far as hardware goes, almost all internal drives on the market speak ATAPI
so there's no compatibility problems there. USB drives use the USB Storage
Class spec, and have the added benefit of being hotpluggable. I'm not sure
about IEEE 1394 drives, there aren't too many on the market anyway.
