I got the same problem, but the issue I had nothing to do with the default
channel.

Are you running gentoo? If so, the mythbackend startup script recently
changed to start mythbackend as user "myth" instead of user "root". This was
the root cause of my problems (don't mind the pun).

if you are running gentoo, verify this by editing /etc/conf.d/mythbackend to
turn all logging on. You will see some permission errors on the v4l devices.
If that's the case, edit /etc/init.d/mythbackend back to using root. I'm
sure there is a good way to allow it to use the user account, but I haven't
figured it out, yet.
