I have never had a problem installing the NVIDIA proprietary driver. 
It's usually just a "sh NVIDIA-driver.run" as root.  Of course I don't
run Suse, nor do use the standard kernel that comes with my Distro.  I
run Slackware 10.2 and I always compile a 2.6.11 kernel.  Try compiling
the 2.6.11 kernel (or whatever version you choose) and then run the
NVIDIA install script, see if it will install then.
