You probably won't like my answer, but.........

Hardware accelerated playback.


Assuming you are doing SD, my prototype system is almost the same as yours:

P3/450
384 M RAM
SB-Live/Value
PVR 350 in and out.

Yeah, it's not always swift getting menu to menu, but it's usable and
the video is flawless.
