The sequence goes...
I start playing a recording and the screen goes dark.  Audio keep
playing (usually) until I hit esc (as with the log below) or I alt-tab
to another window.  At this point the keyboard and mouse are non
responsive and the screen remains black.

The log below is a result of 
mythfrontend -v playback,general,important > mythfrontend.log

It looks as though the problem with the lack of video and subsequent
freezing lies in the xorg.conf.  Load "glx" in the modules section and
Driver "nv" in the DEVICE section don't seem to get along together.  If
I change the driver to "nvidia" then mythfrontend plays recording.
Loading just "nv" causes the front end to seize.

There are a lot of posts on the subject (which I am wading thru).  The
consensus seems to say "nv" good - "nvidia" bad.
