Work for what? I rummaged through my 'parts bin' last night and
pulled out a DVB-S card. It takes a smart card (I'd guess one of
those cards inside your set top box from your satellite company). I'd
suspect I could use it as a receiver to capture satellite I could
receive on my box, but receive it on my computer instead. Thinking
"Wow!" I thought I'd investigate a bit. Apparently in the US we don't
support DVB-S, at least not freely (free to air DVB-S is in other
countries though). It's proprietary and the DVB-S cards won't work
with it.
The card I have is (or was) an expensive card! It was originally
priced at something like 350 bucks, USD. It seems my card is more for
data driven through a Satellite, not mpeg, but I don't see the
difference other than how it's encrypted. If I had satellite TV I
could give it a run, but being cheap, poor, and skeptical, I'll hold
out for quite some time.
So my [short] SWAG (Scientific Wild A** Guess) is no, it won't work.
My curious "Could it work though, if I had a card to try it out with"
side of me is saying, why not try?
(...maybe swing by my brother's house to "borrow" his card for a day)
