If you check the folder

/var/cache/yum/atrpms/packages/

you may find your old FC5 lirc-kmdl package is still there. The cache
is not automatically cleared and any old packages you have installed
are normally still there.

Also, if you run yum manually with the '--exclude=kernel*' option, the
kernel will not be upgraded.
