You are pretty much right.  I haven't used a universal, but the
Streamzap is basically just a USB IR receiver, so any IR remote should
work with it.  A cheap and easy way to find out is to get it all
working, then launch "irw" in a terminal, point any other *IR* remote
at your receiver and see if any 'junk' shows up on the screen.  If it
does, well then all you have to do is create an lircd.conf for that
remote and an lircrc for your application(s).
