William, thanks for the clarification.

It seems that something is wrong with the ac3 aspect of my mytharchive
installation. Any recommendations on what I can try to get this
working? Are there certain codecs I should have that I might be
missing? This seems unlikely b/c the final .mpg file has the a52
stream.

I tried another approach, following the instructions on the wiki page,
'Archiving Recordings to DVD.' using the 'newfile.mpg' file that was
created by mytharchive. I was able to follow those instructions and
ultimately make an image file. However, the VOB has the codec mpga
listed for the audio..
