Is your receiver showing PCM 48000 with this option? Also, according
to your outputs, you used -ao alsa:device=digital in this case.

The only differences I can see are a slight change in buffer size and
the fact that this time you used -ao alsa:device=default.
Can you try the following command lines and let me know what happens
(including what the receiver says):
mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa:device=digital -ac hwac3 ~/test.mpg
mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa:device=digital-hw -ac hwac3 ~/test.mpg
mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa:device=mixed-digital -ac hwac3 ~/test.mpg
mplayer -vo xv -ao alsa:device=dmix-digital -ac hwac3 ~/test.mpg
