You were right, I was using MPlayer, not Xine.  The MPlayer docs are
better, so I quickly discovered that its "/" and "*" for vol down and
up respectively.

I really hated asking that question, but my wife was getting impatient
with my blundering.  It's amazing how quickly they forget the positive
aspects when they are having to wait to be able to watch a DVD.
