It's called teaching them to be responsible not "nursemaid"ing.  What
kind of world do you think our kids will all be living if nobody teaches
them how to be responsible?

Well, if they don't want to do it for conservation, how about having
them do it for the privilege of watching the TV?  If they leave it on,
suspend the privilege for a week.  I guarantee it won't take many weeks
of not watching it before they learn to turn it off.

This is how the real world works.  Why not prepare them for it?  They
will thank you in the long run.
