[mythtv-users] Switch to enable "TiVO" like experience? WAS Re:mythtv keeping recordings of everything i watch?

I come from the Tivo world, and I find the Mythtv LiveTV
behavior to be very useless. Meaning, if I simply turn off the
TV and fail to exit to the Menu or turn off the Mythtv
frontend, I end up with somewhere around 30G of LiveTV
recordings (including the Paid Advertising spots that repeated
at 3,4,and 5am) before I ever make it back to the boob tube.
This is a lot of disk to some people! Could be upwards of 1/4th
of their storage.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all that one camp of this thread is asking
for is an expiration of 30, 60, 1hr,... of programs that are recorded in
LiveTV mode. Something less than 1 day. And to keep the tuner recording
where I left it unless it is required to record a requested program.

I absolutely have had the experience using Tivo, where I turned on the TV
to find a program recording, and backed up as far as I could go because I
wanted to watch that program. Many times recording it, and wanting what
was in the buffer to be recorded too. The problem with Tivo is that many
times that 30 minutes is just not enough, if the program is 40 minutes in.

I understand that you can set a threshold to keep n Gigs available for
requested recordings. But if memory serves me correctly, the LiveTV expire
setting min is 1 day. Correct?

Rewinding live tv to before you started watching is not particularly
useful in my opinion... what are the chances it was on the right
channel? Pretty good actually. Since most of the
shows I watch are on a handful of channels, chances are that the tuner
is on a channel where something interesting is on. This is especially
true if you watch a lot of "theme" channels (e.g. cooking or home
improvement channels). So combining this with the mythtv
approach to things, the idea would be for tuners to automatically record
all the time, but to auto-delete when the recording is finished unless
the user starts watching it? (or maybe half an hour after the recording is
finished). Actually, I'd like to pass on that, thank you. I've
heard stories about TiVo drives thrashing themselves to death. If this
is going to be implemented, at least make it optional for those of us
who don't watch a lot of LiveTV. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version:
