It's iec958 (not spdif). Try moving your asound.conf and then start the
frontend. I.e.
mv /etc/asound.conf /etc/asound.conf-bak
Also, aplay is likely to fail with iec958 (because you /must/ have a
specific type of input for it to work), so test with mythfrontend using
AC-3 passthrough and a recording that you know has an AC-3 stream.
