just for kicks, try xmame -fullscreen -vidmod 2 -nocursor
-skip_gameinfo $ROMNAME

specifically, I suspect that the '-vidmod 2' parameter is what you
want to change so that it will use OpenGL.

if your xmame options differ slightly, do 'xmame --help |more' and
read carefully.
