I am pretty sure I am not doing commflagging on the fly, and i know
that commflagging by itself doesnt generate this much activity on the
system drive anyway.
i checked into the suggestion about mounting with noatime, and it is
already configured that way.
an interesting comparison is that this same hardware with knoppmyth
installed did not do this, so it must be configuration somewhere
(mythtv, mysql, or ?).
i installed lsof dont think it can help me. it only seems to list open
files, not which files or proceses are responsible for the activity. i
am wondering if there is anything similar to top, but which will
display processes or files sorted by how much hard drive i/o they are
creating. if i am eventually able to find what process/file is the
cause, maybe it would be possible to put it on a ramdisk or some kind
of memory based filesystem.
the other options of course is to put in a quieter drive, but the one
i have is ideal size-wize for this installation, and the activity does
seem to tie up a good amount of system resources as well.
