[mythtv-users] MythTV 0.18.1 + nforce2 soundstorm SPDIF + ac3 = no sound?

Hey all, here's my setup:

ASUS A7N8X-deluxe with soundstorm, using intel8x0 driver from kernel
2.6.15.1.
Mythtv 0.18.1 compiled myself, yes it has ALSA.
PCHDTV-2000 tuner, ATSC connected and working just fine
asound.conf stolen from the digital sound howto, see below
Logitech Z680 speakers (can decode Dolby digital/ac3, DTS, PCM) connected
using coaxial spdif connector on back of motherboard (is an RCA connector)

The problem:
With ALSA:digital and "enable ac3 passthru to SPDIF" and my asound.conf, I
can get sound working out the SPDIF port, but it only outputs stereo! This
works fine if i'm recording something that doesn't have ac3 sound, but when
I recorded tonight's premiere of 24 (has ac3 I believe) it has no sound upon
playback. I get sound when I use watch live tv (is stereo though, not dolby
digital)

I've tried the following and ALL POSSIBLE VARIATIONS/PERMUTATIONS thereof:
- setting myth's sound device to ALSA:digital, and
ALSA:iec958:AES0=0x6,AES1=0x82,AES2=0x0,AES3=0x2, and
ALSA:digital:AES0=0x6,AES1=0x82,AES2=0x0,AES3=0x2.
No luck
- turning the "enable ac3 passthru to spdif" option on and off
- turning the "use internal volume controls" option on and off, setting the
mixer to ctl.digital as directed
- dinking around with amixer
- everything! EVERYtHING!

gah! Help me make this stupid thing output real dolby digital in raw mode,
not pcm/stereo. Remember, it works for everything that isn't ac3 ... and it
outputs properly over spdif...
