Exactly.  Give them a raid filesystem, then create the array using mdadm,
then put whatever filesystem on it that you want - I use reiserfs.  Below is
my mdadm.conf:

DEVICE /dev/sda* /dev/sdb* /dev/sdc* /dev/sdd*
ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid5 num-devices=4 auto=yes
UUID=9b1c10ee:174c369e:815e8d0
7:1e7570a3
   devices=/dev/sda,/dev/sdb,/dev/sdc,/dev/sdd
