Depends on the SATA controller.  I have a promise SATA300 TX4 which is supported in kernel-2.6.14 and up.  The latest 
gentoo live CD is kernel-2.6.12.  Gets a little tricky then, but it can be done.  Even Ubuntu is 2.6.12.
