[mythtv-users] More problems than it's worth?

Honestly. . .

I had a mythTV system up and running about 2 years ago, and it was
VERY hard for me to maintain. I'm not a CLI Linux person by nature,
so it was extra difficult for me to learn how to follow Jarod's
guide, and get a RHFC system up and running with MythTV.

About 9 months after it was running, it died and I was not able to
figure out how to fix it, so I installed Windows XP and BeyondTV.
BeyondTV worked with my PVR-250, and did fine for a long time until
they upgraded to version 4, and their DIVX support blew chunks. Also,
they standardized on .wmv in stead of just about any other technology
which would be superior (.wmv REALLY sucks!). I decided to try my
hands at MythTV again.

This time around, I tried my hand at Jarod's guide, and RHFC
again. It was not easy at all. I had a hell of a time getting LIRC
working (it never did, really), and other things caused problems as
well.

I tried Knoppmyth about 2 days ago, and it is GREAT!!!! I had to
do some manual placing of files to control my DirecTV receivers via a
serial cable, but more or less, it was easy stuff. Only regret - I
cannot use my 400GB of SATA drives that I have in my PC with
Knoppmyth because - no matter how I try and no matter how I ask, no
one is either willing or able to help me set them up, and I don't
know how to do it myself. I have Knoppmyth running on a 160GB IDE
drive right now, I hope to integrate the SATA drives later on.

Anyway, these lists have proven a VERY valuable resource. MythTV
is a technology in progress and it does have bugs/problems. That
being said, if you get it up and running, and if you don't try to
upgrade every time a new technology comes out, you'll have a fairly
stable system that will serve you well.

   Best of luck,
