What he said!  CLI mail readers are *vastly* underrated, and 
screen+mutt over ssh makes it easy to read my email almost anywhere.  I 
just keep a copy of the PuTTY client on my web server so I can download 
it to the internet kiosk in whatever country I'm visiting.

The other thing I do is I use Courier mail because Maildir folders 
are much faster than mbox storage and because it supports IMAP over 
SSL with my iPAQ PDA's email reader.  All my inbound email is 
forwarded to maildrop for sorting into folders based on keywords in 
the headers (it can also search bodies if you want, but it's slower).

The only thing I haven't brought to the party yet is SMTP greylisting.
